Replitiques is in business to provide you with the beautifully-crafted colonial reproductions featured on our other pages. However, we'd also like to share other things with you. Our history page provides background on kitchen and "everyday" life in Colonial America. It's also got reference material listings - both on the Web and in books. We hope to continue to add to that page over time.
This is Replitiques' kitchen. It's where I'll share recipes I've developed over the years, and where we'll recommend some favorite cookbooks to you sometimes too. I also try new baking tools from time to time, and I'll tell you about any I find useful. For example, if you make a lot of cookies (or even just bake for birthdays or holidays), the Silpat cooking mat will make the job much easier. You can get them at more and more cooking stores these days, or order from Amazon. They will make cleaning up a snap, and prevent your cookies from sticking like nothing else does. I hope you enjoy visiting us.
Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup solid shortening (i.e. Crisco)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. baking soda dissolved thoroughly into 1 cup buttermilk
- 4 cups flour mixed with 1 tsp. baking powder
Directions: Cream the shortening and sugar together using an electrix mixer until light and fluffy. Add the egg and salt and mix thoroughly. Alternately mix in the flour and the buttermilk mixture until well blended. Drop onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees until nicely browned on top, about 11 minutes.
