Shaker sconceShaker Candle Sconce - circa 1800's

This candle sconce was one of several produced by the Shakers. Its four-hole design was used as a means to adjust the height of the candle light when hung from a pegboard.

Shown here in Sullivan Green, it measures 19-1/2" h x 6-1/2"w x 5-1/2"d. If you'd like to see it in Burgundy Red or British Blue, click here.
Price: $33 each, or $64 per pair.

scalloped sconceScalloped Candle Sconce - circa 1700's

An unusual design by a craftsman who tried to "dress up" his sconce by adding pointed scalloped sides to what was normally a simple two-piece shelf. A polished tin reflector increases its lighting efficiency.

This sconce measures 16"h x 4"w x 4"d, and is shown here in a Candlelight pine finish. Price: $39.95 each, or $75 per pair.

candle sconce

Candle Sconce - circa 1700's:

Origin unknown. Many early wall-hung candle sconces were simply a small shelf on which to place a candle at a height where it would throw its light where needed and to prevent it from being knocked over. This design has added sides to prevent drafts from blowing the candle out and a back to protect the wall from soot. Shown here in bright York Red, the sconce measures 14-1/2"h x 6-1/4"w x 5"d. Click here to see this sconce in a range of colors. Price: $34.95, or $65.95 per pair.

open candle box Candle Box - circa early 1700's

Probably used to store candles since the original was coated inside with bits of melted wax. Wall boxes such as the ones represented by this piece were also used for general storage: for matches, small tools, etc. We use two of them for mail - one by the door for outgoing, and one by the desk for incoming!

This box measures 9"h x 11-1/2"w x 5"d. It is is featured here in Colonial Blue. Price: $37.95

long candle boxwhite candle box

Long Candle Box- circa 1750's

The original this piece was modeled upon was found in New Hampshire. Candle boxes came in various sizes and shapes--some were lidded, most were open. This one has an unusual sloped/angled design. Shown here in both York Red and Cupboard White, its measurements are 5-1/4"h x 16-1/2"w x 7"d. Price: $69.95.

Amazon writes that this book shows how to find acceptable ways to recreate period-type lighting for historical homes. They go on to write: "This invaluable guide provides both a history of lighting in America and a catalog of 481 suitable reproductions available today. Noted historian Roger Moss shows how interiors from the 1620s to the 1930s can be well lighted yet still maintain their character. Reproductions are organized by lighting source (candles, burning fluids, kerosene, gas and electricity) and fixture type (chandeliers, wall brackets and hall lights)."
