The back design is a modified "lollipop" configuration common in many early pieces. There were no salt shakers and cooking salt was available only in large clumps. Sled Spoon Box Spoon Rack Stools Tea Tray	"Fancy" Salt Box - circa 1770's: The original from which this piece was reproduced came from Pennsylvania. Salt was a necessity in early America, primarily for preserving food as well as flavoring. Salt boxes were usually hung by the stove and in the food preparation areas. Most had lids to protect this valuable chemical from grease and soot. Shown here in a Cupboard White finish and Black, its dimensions are 11-1/2" h x 7-3/4"w x 5-1/4"d.
