The original piece from which this copy was reproduced came from Massachusetts. The back design is a modified "lollipop" configuration common in many early pieces. There were no salt shakers and cooking salt was available only in large clumps. Most salt boxes were hung by the wood cook stove.

The original from which this piece was reproduced came from Pennsylvania. Salt was a necessity in early America, primarily for preserving food as well as flavoring. Salt boxes were usually hung by the stove and in the food preparation areas. Most had lids to protect this valuable chemical from grease and soot.

Shown here in a Cupboard White finish and Black, its dimensions are 11-1/2" h x 7-3/4"w x 5-1/4"d. Price: $55, or $104.95 for two. The original from which this piece was reproduced came from Pennsylvania. Like the "fancy" salt box above, this small box is lidded to protect the salt.
